How To Repair Stopped Up Air Conditioner Drain Pipe

An important part of your air conditioning unit is the drain pipe, also known as a drain line, drip line or condensation line.

The purpose of the drain pipe is to remove excess condensation that naturally occurs inside the air conditioning unit.

When the drain pipe becomes clogged with mold, mildew or other debris, excess moisture will leak from the air conditioner and into your home, creating water damage and possibly an expensive repair bill.

How to Repair Stopped Up Air Conditioner Drain Pipe

Remove air conditioning power cord from outlet

Remove the air conditioning power cord from the outlet. For units hard-wired into your home's electrical system, turn off the breaker switch.

Detach air conditioner front panel

Detach the air conditioner front panel. Depending on the make and model of your unit, you may need to remove several screws securing the panel in place.

Disconnect drain pipe from AC unit

Disconnect the drain pipe from the AC unit.

Typically, the drain pipe is located near the bottom of the drain pan and below the condenser coil.

Attach a nozzle that fits snugly on a wet or dry vacuum.

You can find the appropriate size attachment at home improvement stores.

Attach the other end of the nozzle to the drain pipe.

Turn the wet or dry vacuum on suck and let the force of the vacuum suck out the clog.

Remove the nozzle from the drain line.
