How To Recharge Room Air Conditioner
When you notice your room air conditioner is blowing out warm air or not cooling the room as desired, the air conditioner unit needs to be recharged with coolant, or refrigerant.
Purchasing a new air conditioner will also fix this problem, but can be rather costly.
To repair and recharge your current unit you can chose to do so yourself by purchasing a refrigerant recharge kit at a local hardware store.
How to Recharge Room Air Conditioner
Remove air conditioner from window and place unit on a towel on floor
Remove the air conditioner from the window and place the unit on a towel on the floor. The towel will protect your rug or tile from scratches or leaks.
Remove screws that secure back metal case in place using a screwdriver
Remove the screws that secure the back metal case in place using a screwdriver. Remove the metal case from the unit by sliding it off. Locate the compressor, which is a metal cylinder with two hoses coming off of it.
Examine can of refrigerant and locate two valves
Examine the can of refrigerant and locate the two valves.
The service valve is the larger of the two valve connectors, connect the service valve to the larger of the two hoses located on the compressor.
Locate the tap valve on the refrigerant can, which is the smaller of the two hoses.
Connect the tap valve to the smaller hose coming off of the compressor.
Turn on the air conditioning unit and put the unit on the highest setting available.
This will begin the recharge process by allowing the coolant into the system.
