How To Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in Pontiac Grand Prix

If all of the air conditioning components are working properly but your Grand Prix is air conditioner is blowing hot air, it may need a recharge.

If your Grand Prix was made after 1994, you can use an R134 refill kit from an auto parts store to recharge the system.

Models made in or before 1994 need to be retrofitted to accept R134 instead of R12 refrigerant.

Inspect air conditioning system in your Grand Prix for leaks

Inspect the air conditioning system in your Grand Prix for leaks. While you are doing this, look for the Low Pressure Side service port. You can find this near the firewall on the passenger side. It is on the line coming out of the compressor. It has a blue or black cap marked LOW on it.

Take cap off of Low Pressure Side and put it in a safe place

Take the cap off of the Low Pressure Side and put it in a safe place. Look at the valve. If it is a screw type connector, you must retrofit the system before you continue because the system is an R12 system. An R134 compatible system has a quick connect valve.

Start ignition and turn on air conditioner

Start the ignition and turn on the air conditioner.

In order to get an accurate pressure reading, you need the compressor to turn on so it is a good idea to put the temperature as low as possible and turn it on MAX.

Check the pressure in the air conditioning system using an automotive air conditioner pressure gauge.

It should be between 25 and 45 psi.

If it is within that range, you need to have it serviced before you add refrigerant.

Attach the refill kit hose to the service port.

Open the hose valve according to the manufacturer's directions.

This allows the system to suction the refrigerant out of the can.

It can take 10 minutes to completely empty a single can.
