Open the upstairs window. Clear any debris off of the windowsill and clean with all-purpose cleaner. Use a leveling device to ensure the windowsill is level.
Install air conditioning mounting brackets onto windowsill or surrounding dry wall
Install the air conditioning mounting brackets onto the windowsill or surrounding dry wall. Make sure the structure you mount the brackets to is able to support the weight of an air conditioning unit. If your windowsills are cracking or crumbling, you may have to use spare lumber to rebuild the windowsill before mounting the supportive brackets.
Install any mounting rails and interior angle support devices included with your air conditioning unit
Install any mounting rails and interior angle support devices included with your air conditioning unit.
Ensure the rails are firmly mounted to the walls surrounding the window.
Insert the air conditioning unit into the mounting brackets of the window frame.
If the unit is too heavy, have another person assist you.
Make sure the unit does not fall out of the upstairs window.
Lower the window onto the air conditioning unit.

Insert foam pieces between the air conditioning unit and the window to create a seal.
