How To Fix Noisy Air Conditioners

A noisy air conditioner usually means an air conditioner that is not operating at peak efficiency.

Fixing the noise is often not a difficult job, but it can be dangerous.

Always make sure that you have turned off the circuit breaker or fuse that is delivering power to your air conditioner before attempting any repairs.

Unplugging a window air conditioner should be enough to interrupt the power supply.

Inspect the fan blades in the outdoor condenser unit of a central air conditioner. Check to see if a foreign object has slipped between the grille holes and is obstructing the rotation of the fans.

Turn power off at main electrical panel and at disconnect switch located near unit

Turn the power off at the main electrical panel and at the disconnect switch located near the unit. Unscrew the side panel containing the electrical connections. Using a non-contact voltage tester, verify there is no power present on any wires. Unscrew the top panel of the outdoor unit. Removal of the panel will vary according to the model. Keep track of the screws as you remove them so they don't get lost.

Do not try to straighten out a bent blade, if any blade is bent, it should be replaced, as even the slightest bend in a fan blade will adversely affect performance.

Spin the blade with your hand after you have removed the foreign object.

Tighten the bolts securing the fan blades to the motor mount if the fan is wobbly or feels loose.

Replace the blades if they continue to make noise even after you've removed the foreign object and tightened the bolts.

Reattach the side and top panels to the condenser unit.

Make sure all the screws are reattached.

Turn on the power to the unit at the disconnect switch and the main service panel.

Turn on the air conditioner and listen to see if the noise has stopped.

Turn on the air conditioner and listen to see if the noise has stopped.
