How To Clean Air Conditioner Condenser Coils

Air conditioning condenser coils, located on the exterior unit, are also called fins.

They consist of thin metal flaps spaced closely together.

Over time, these coils become clogged with dirt and leaves and will even grow mold and mildew.

Cleaning the condenser coils improves the interior air quality of the home and the efficiency of the air conditioning unit.

Cleaning the coils is a basic task that homeowners can accomplish themselves.

Walk to outdoor air conditioner unit and look for a metal box mounted on side of home

Walk to the outdoor air conditioner unit and look for a metal box mounted on the side of the home. Open the box and grasp the plug inside. Pull the plug out or lower it to the down position, depending on the model, to cut power to the unit.

Locate screws or bolts at base of air conditioner and remove m by turning counterclockwise

Locate the screws or bolts at the base of the air conditioner and remove them by turning counterclockwise. Set the bolts and screws in a safe location and pick the top grill off the main unit. Set the grill aside.

Brush visible condenser coils gently with a broom to dislodge any dirt and leaves stuck to outside of coils

Place a brush attachment onto the end of the shop vacuum hose and vacuum all the condenser coils thoroughly.

Attach a sprayer nozzle onto a garden hose and turn on the faucet.

Spray the coils with the hose using a light spray and working from the top of the coils down to the bottom.
