How To Adjust Registers on Air Conditioner

Your home air conditioner uses registers to blow the cool air into the room.

Registers have louvers that move up and down to open the air flow to varying degrees.

Adjusting the registers on an air conditioner depends on your type of air conditioner and the registers locations.

Unlike a central air conditioning system, room air conditioners have directional louvers to point the air in a certain direction.

How to Adjust Registers on Air Conditioner

Move adjustment lever up or down with your fingers

Move the adjustment lever up or down with your fingers, if you have wall or floor registers with a central air conditioner. The adjustment lever is on the right side of the vent. Move the lever to the top of the vent to close the louvers, lower the lever to the bottom to open the louver fully. Place the lever in the middle position to open the register louver halfway.

Turn dial on side of register vent

Turn the dial on the side of the register vent, if you have ceiling-mount registers. Turn the dial toward the top of the vent to close the louver or toward the bottom of the vent to open the louvers fully. Partially open the register louver, using the dial.

Grasp tab near middle of register with your fingers

Grasp the tab near the middle of the register with your fingers, if you have a room air conditioner.

Move the tab up or down to help direct the air flow where you want.

There is also a tab for the vertical louver you move side to side.

Do not close room air conditioner registers because it will cause the coils to freeze over.
