All About Troubleshoot R.V. Air Conditioner

RVs provide ample living and sleeping room while affording their occupants the ability to travel far and wide without paying for hotels along the way.

Like all dwellings, RVs can get hot in the summertime or when they're in driving mode.

RV air conditioners are all the same size and most operate in a similar way.

There are some basic things to check if you feel that the AC isn't working in your RV properly.

How to Troubleshoot R.V. Air Conditioner

Listen to see if you hear air compressor coming on when you start air conditioner

Listen to see if you hear the air compressor coming on when you start the air conditioner. It sounds like a small car engine running. If the air compressor doesn't turn on then it could be either a problem with the thermostat or the relay switch.

Check voltage listed on unit

Check the voltage listed on the unit. Some RVs don't supply 110 Volts, which is the standard indoor electrical voltage in the US. If the unit shuts down randomly or doesn't start at all, this can be the problem.

Check condenser coils and inside evaporator if air isn't coming out cold

Check the condenser coils and the inside evaporator if the air isn't coming out cold.

These can get blocked and the refrigerant won't flow properly to these parts.

The evaporator coils are located under the air filter.

Inspect the air filter if your air conditioner isn't cold.

The air filter needs to be removed from the air conditioning unit and vacuumed one time a week.

No tools are necessary to remove the filter, it should slide right off the RV air conditioner.

Feel the air coming out of the air conditioner.

If the air is cold but the RV is still warm or hot, then you should try installing shades to block out the sun.
