Unclog the Condensate Drain on an Air Conditioner - Locate the power switch for the AC unit, and switch it to the "off" position. This can be done at the main circuit breaker for the AC unit or on a subpanel for the unit, if one is installed.Look for the tail end of the condensate drain line for the AC unit. This may be located on the outside of your house. Common locations are near the foundation or beneath the eaves on the roof. These are typically made out of PVC pipe, especially in newer systems. Check that the end of the drain pipe is free and clear of any blockages. Brush away any leaves, twigs or debris. Insert a few inches of plastic tubing into the pipe end to clear up any blockages inside.
Locate the drain pan for your AC unit. This is mounted beneath the evaporator, which is the part of the AC located on the inside of your house. Typical installation points include the attic or the basement.
Vacuum out any standing water in the drain pan with the shop vac. Look for the outlet in the drain pan where the drain hose is attached. Clear away any mold or mildew from the front of the outlet with the brush.
Insert the flexible tubing into the drain opening. Continue to push the tubing into the drain tube until you feel it meet the blockage. Move the hose back and forth several times in the area of the blockage to help clear it out.
