Recharge a Room Air Conditioner - Remove the air conditioner from the window and place the unit on a towel on the floor. The towel will protect your rug or tile from scratches or leaks.Remove the screws that secure the back metal case in place using a screwdriver. Remove the metal case from the unit by sliding it off. Locate the compressor, which is a metal cylinder with two hoses coming off of it.
Examine the can of refrigerant and locate the two valves. The service valve is the larger of the two valve connectors; connect the service valve to the larger of the two hoses located on the compressor.
Locate the tap valve on the refrigerant can, which is the smaller of the two hoses. Connect the tap valve to the smaller hose coming off of the compressor.
Turn on the air conditioning unit and put the unit on the highest setting available. This will begin the recharge process by allowing the coolant into the system.
When you notice your room air conditioner is blowing out warm air or not cooling the room as desired, the air conditioner unit needs to be recharged with coolant, or refrigerant. Purchasing a new air conditioner will also fix this problem, but can be rather costly.
