Enter the cost of the air conditioning unit in Part I of Form 5695 in the line item for "Energy-efficient building property." For 2009 federal tax returns, use Line 3a. Do not include costs for assembly or installation in the cost of the air conditioning unit.

Multiply the total cost of the AC unit by 30 percent (.30) and enter the total on the appropriate line on the Form 5695. For 2009 federal tax returns, use Line 5.

Enter the lesser of the amount calculated in Step 4 or $1500 on the last line of the front page of Form 5695. That is the amount of your credit.

If you replaced an outdated air conditioning (AC) unit in your home with an energy-efficient model, you can deduct a portion of the cost of the new air conditioning unit on your federal tax return. In order to qualify for the deduction, the new unit must be located in your primary residence, the residence must be located in the United States, and the improvement must meet the highest efficiency tier rating established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency.
