Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in a Mercury Villager - Inspect the air conditioning system for damage or leaks. As you do this, keep an eye open for the Low Pressure Side port. This is located near the firewall on the passenger side of the van facing toward the center of the engine. It has a black cap on it. Remove the cap.Turn on the van and start the air conditioner. Turn it on the highest fan speed and the lowest temperature.
Check the pressure in the system using an automotive air conditioning pressure gauge. If it is below 25 psi, you need to add more refrigerant. If it is above 25 psi, lack of pressure isn't the problem and you should have a professional check it out.
Hook up the refrigerant refill kit to the Low Pressure Side port. The way you do this will vary depending on the type of kit and the manufacturer, so read and follow the directions included in the kit.
Continue to add refrigerant until the pressure is between 25 and 45 psi. If the pressure gets any higher than 45 psi, an explosion could occur, causing serious injury or even death so it is important to check the pressure often when you are recharging the system.
Recharging the air conditioner yourself in a Mercury Villager is possible if it is compatible with R134 refrigerant. Some models made prior to 1995 may have to be retrofitted to accept R134 refrigerant instead of R12 refrigerant.
