Get an Air Conditioner to Work Colder - Verify that the air conditioner is plugged into a functioning electrical outlet. Replace or reset the circuit breaker or fuse as necessary.Turn the main control switch to "On" and set the temperature control to a point that is colder than the current outdoor temperature. Air conditioners will not operate or run if the thermostat is set to a point warmer than the ambient temperature. Set the thermostat to "Auto" to enable the unit to run as needed to cool the home to a specified temperature.
Check the area around the air conditioner for items that may be blocking the air flow, such as furniture, gardening items, bushes, leaves or other debris. The air conditioner will function poorly if the vents and grilles are blocked. Look at the return air grilles and registers in the home, and clear away items from those spaces as well.
Disconnect and turn off the air conditioner. Open the main panel to access the air filter. If the filter is permanent, remove it and clean it with cold water and dish-washing liquid. Place the filter in a dry area and wait until it is completely dry before replacing it into the air conditioner. If the filter is marked "Disposable," replace it with a new filter.
